Netflix, the world-famous streaming platform, has made history by using generative artificial intelligence (AI) in a television series for the first time. The show, an Argentinian science fiction drama titled El Eternauta (also known as The Eternaut), explores the struggles of survivors battling a deadly toxic snowfall. In a striking scene set in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, AI technology was employed to create the dramatic visual effect of a building collapsing. This innovative approach has caught the attention of both creators and viewers worldwide.
Ted Sarandos, co-chief executive at Netflix, described this development as a major leap forward for the industry. He believes AI provides an exciting opportunity for filmmakers and artists to enhance the quality of their work, rather than simply cutting costs. In the case of El Eternauta, AI tools enabled visual effects teams to produce the building collapse scene ten times faster than traditional methods would have allowed. Additionally, the cost of achieving such a high-quality effect was significantly reduced, making it feasible for a series with a limited budget. Sarandos stressed that this technology supports real people doing creative work, equipping them with advanced tools to bring their ideas to life.
Despite the enthusiasm, the introduction of AI in entertainment has sparked some concerns. Many worry that it could lead to job losses, particularly in fields like special effects and production. Last year, Hollywood actors and writers went on strike, partly due to fears that AI might replace human workers. However, agreements were reached to ensure that AI remains a tool under the control of creators, not a replacement for them. Sarandos remains positive, suggesting that AI can open up new possibilities for storytelling and visual creativity.
This breakthrough comes at a time when Netflix is enjoying strong financial success, reporting a revenue of 11 billion dollars for the quarter ending in June. Popular series like Squid Game have contributed to this achievement, and the company expects significant growth in its advertising business this year. While AI offers Netflix a way to create impressive visuals at a lower cost, it also raises important questions about the future of employment in the entertainment industry. As technology continues to evolve, the balance between innovation and job security remains a topic of heated debate.
