A recent study in North America explored how small rodents escape predators. Scientists wanted to find out if having two legs or four legs helps these animals stay safe. They studied different types of rodents, such as kangaroo rats, which jump on two legs, and others like pocket mice, woodrats, and ground squirrels, which usually run on four legs. The research took place in a desert, where the team used a fake snake to scare the rodents and observe their reactions. They discovered that kangaroo rats and pocket mice jumped very quickly when frightened. These two were faster than woodrats and ground squirrels, which moved more slowly or just ran without jumping. The study suggests that jumping on two legs might give some rodents an advantage, especially because their strong back legs help them move fast. This ability to escape quickly is very important for their survival. Not all rodents jump, but those that do seem better protected from predators like snakes. The researchers plan to study further why some rodents choose to jump while others prefer to run.
