A British artificial intelligence (AI) company, Narwhal Labs, has recently come under intense scrutiny following accusations of sexism and misogyny concerning its latest advertising campaign. The company, which successfully secured millions of pounds in investment, has attracted significant criticism for its promotional materials.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reported receiving at least seven formal complaints regarding the campaign. A particular advert that ignited much of the controversy featured a woman alongside the provocative slogan: “She outworks everyone. And she’ll never ask for a raise.” It continued, “Meet your new AI employee. Always on, never sick and no HR required.” Another similar advertisement showed the same woman with the text: “Working 9-5? She works 24/7. And she starts for free.”
These advertisements were prominently displayed on large banners at Bristol Airport but were swiftly removed after public concerns were raised. Critics argue that the campaign promotes harmful stereotypes about women in the professional world. Kate Bell, assistant general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), condemned the advert as “deeply sexist,” suggesting it painted a troubling picture of a future where technology might displace workers, particularly women. Rebecca Horne from Pregnant Then Screwed described it as “misogyny with a marketing budget,” highlighting how it reinforces the harmful idea of an ideal female worker being constantly available, compliant, and unpaid.
Narwhal Labs, established in 2022, is the developer of DeepBlue OS, a platform that employs ‘agentic AI’ to manage tasks such as customer inquiries and scheduling appointments without human intervention. In response to the backlash, the company released a statement acknowledging the “strength of feeling” their campaign had provoked. They clarified that the billboards were never intended to be perceived as misogynistic or racist, explaining that their campaign included individuals from diverse backgrounds. Narwhal Labs asserted that the core message was about the broader societal impact of AI – portraying a battle between “humans versus machines” – rather than suggesting one group would suffer at the expense of another. Furthermore, the company called for legislation to regulate AI, advocating for transparency in its use and support for employees affected by its implementation.
The incident underscores a growing societal debate about the integration of AI into daily life and various workplaces, raising crucial questions about responsible technological advancement.
