In a startling incident from the United States, a medical journal has raised concerns about the dangers of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT for health advice. A 60-year-old man developed a rare and harmful condition known as bromism, or bromide toxicity, after reportedly following suggestions from the chatbot. Bromism, a condition recognized in the early 20th century, was often associated with mental health issues and was linked to numerous psychiatric hospital admissions during that era.
According to a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the man had been investigating the harmful effects of table salt, scientifically known as sodium chloride, on health. Determined to reduce his salt intake, he sought guidance from ChatGPT. Over three months, he replaced table salt with sodium bromide, a substance historically used as a sedative but which can be toxic in large quantities. Although some sources indicate sodium bromide is used for purposes like cleaning, the man consumed it as a dietary substitute. When he eventually sought medical help, he displayed clear symptoms of bromism, including facial acne, excessive thirst, insomnia, and even paranoia, convinced that his neighbor was poisoning him. After hospital treatment, his condition improved, but the episode sparked widespread alarm.
Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle, who authored the journal article, emphasized that this case illustrates the potential risks of AI in health-related contexts. They tested ChatGPT themselves and found that it suggested bromide as a possible alternative to chloride without providing adequate warnings or inquiring about the user’s intentions—something a healthcare professional would typically do. Although the latest version of ChatGPT, powered by the advanced GPT-5 model, claims to handle health queries with greater caution, the company behind it insists that the tool should never replace professional medical advice.
This incident highlights the increasing influence of AI in daily life and the hazards of relying on it for critical decisions, particularly in sensitive fields like healthcare. As technology continues to evolve, finding a balance between its advantages and the need for caution becomes essential. Stories like this remind us to approach AI tools with a critical mind, especially when it comes to personal well-being.
