The results of this extensive assessment highlighted several outstanding options. The Mission Workshop Meridian backpack was acclaimed as “Best overall.” Its impressive array of pockets, modular design, and exceptional waterproofing made it ideal for professionals requiring ample equipment storage. However, its substantial size might restrict its use as a personal item on some flights. For frequent travellers, the Peak Design Travel Backpack distinguished itself with a unique packing experience, featuring a wide-opening main compartment, though its strap adjustments proved challenging, and its waterproofing was only moderate. The North Face Vault emerged as the “Best budget” recommendation, praised as a simple, reliable bag with high capacity. Nonetheless, its lack of waterproofing and limited comfort during extended wear were notable drawbacks. The review also touched upon other categories, such as compact sling bags for day trips and robust options for extreme environments.
When selecting a laptop backpack, the expert advises prioritising capacity, organisation, security, waterproofing, and overall comfort. Particular attention should be paid to the bottom padding within the laptop sleeve, as this provides crucial protection against impacts when the bag is set down. For backpacks with fewer internal pockets, utilising packing cubes or specialised tech pouches can significantly enhance organisation. Should you find yourself caught in rainfall with a less waterproof bag, a simple plastic garbage bag can offer temporary protection, followed by proper drying in an airy room to prevent moisture damage.
