A tragic incident involving a Tesla Cybertruck in California has led to a lawsuit against the electric car manufacturer. Last November, 19-year-old college student Krysta Tsukahara lost her life in a devastating crash while visiting her family in Piedmont during Thanksgiving weekend. The Cybertruck, carrying four passengers, was speeding when it collided with a tree and caught fire. Tragically, only one person survived the accident.
The lawsuit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court by Krysta’s family, points to a critical design flaw in the Cybertruck’s door handles as a key factor in her death. According to the family’s lawyer, the vehicle’s electric power failed during the fire, causing the doors to lock automatically and trapping the passengers inside. Unlike conventional cars, the Cybertruck’s rear doors lack a simple manual opening mechanism for emergencies. Instead, a hidden cable must be pulled from an almost inaccessible location—a task that proved impossible in the chaotic situation. Even from the outside, the vehicle’s sleek, flush handles made it difficult for rescuers to open the doors. The family claims that this prevented Krysta from escaping, resulting in her death from smoke inhalation and burns rather than the initial impact.
This heartbreaking case has sparked wider concerns about Tesla’s heavy reliance on electronic systems in their vehicles. Safety experts have questioned the design, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now investigating the matter. Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk and known for its cutting-edge technology, has not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit. However, this is not the first time the company has faced criticism over safety issues. Despite high crash test ratings, the Cybertruck has been recalled eight times since its release less than two years ago.
Krysta’s parents expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, revealing that their daughter was alive after the crash and desperately called for help, but could not escape. Their grief raises an important question: should companies prioritize innovative and stylish designs over essential safety features? The family is also taking legal action against the estate of the driver, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the accident and also perished in the crash. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need to balance technological advancements with fundamental safety measures.
